Herb for Common Cold and Neck Pain

Cropped_Qiang_HuoThe herb for this post is the notopterygium root.

The Chinese characters for siler root are 羌活, Romanized as Qiāng Huó, and pronounced like “Chyong Hwaw.”  There is no special translation for this it is just a description of the plant.  We believe that the Chinese pronunciation is easier than the Latin and English.

Notopterygium Root Treats Common Cold and Influenza

A study from Fujian Chinese Medicine and Herbology showed that of the 149 patients with common cold or influenza that were treated, 93.33% obtained relief who took a deocotion containing Qiāng Huó.

A multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, dose-escalation trial from Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine showed that patients who took a pill containing Qiāng Huó got over the common cold faster than the patients who took the placebo.

Qiāng Huó Protects Against Cancer

A study from Planta Medica showed that notopterygium root has a strong toxicity against pancreatic cancer cells.  Another study from the same journal demonstrated toxicity against liver and breast cancer cells.

Notopterygium Root is a Potent Pain Killer

Chemical and Pharmacological Bulletin showed that notopterol which comes from Qiāng Huó is a strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic chemical.

Other Miscellaneous Symptoms Treated by Qiāng Huó

  • Neck Pain
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Headache
  • Arthritis

Chinese medical terms are different than standard western medical terms.  Qiāng Huó, releases the exterior and dispels cold.  Notopterygium root dispels wind, cold, and damp, and relieves pain.

Qiāng Huó is contraindicated in patients who have fevers, yin vacuity, or muscle aches and pain because of blood vacuity and patients who have painful obstruction syndrome who have red tongues with scanty or absent tongue coating.
