White Peony Root

Cropped_Bai_ShaoNormally I am skeptical; strike that, downright distrustful of anyone or anything claiming that an herb, vitamin, or enzyme can treat “everything.”  In fact any product or person who says that a certain substance can treat a whole range of diseases automatically is doubted.  But this herb, the white peony is actually one of the few herbs that treats a wide range of ailments.  The catch is that it has to be paired with or added to other herbs.

The white peony root is plucked in the summer and in the autumn.  The roots are peeled, boiled, and then dried in the sun.  The Chinese characters are 白芍, Romanized as Bái Sháo, and pronounced like “buy shou” (like shower without the –er.)  The name has no exotic meaning it means “white peony.”

White Peony Helps Women

This herb almost treats everything, as I wrote above.  White Peony treats breast distention and premenstrual syndrome.  It treats PMDD as well.  Bái Sháo helps with irregular periods, uterine bleeding, clotted periods, amenorrhea (no period), hypermenorrhea (excessive menstrual bleeding), and hypomenorrhea (slight and scanty bleeding.)

White Peony Treats Pain, Spasms, and Cramps

When paired with licorice root, white peony treats abdominal, rib area, and smooth muscle spasms and cramps.  Other herbs that are too many to mention in this short blog post help modify the effects of Bái Sháo to treat spasms, cramps, and pain in other areas of the body.  When paired with quince fruit, and chicken blood vine, white peony treats spasms and cramps in the calves.

White Peony Alleviates Intestinal Problems

The herb treats diarrhea, abdominal pain, rumbling intestines, a feeling of incomplete evacuation of the bowels (tenesmus), burning anus and rectum, and dysentery.  Bái Sháo is usually combined with coptis root, scutellaria root, atractylodis rhizome, or costus root.

Other Miscellaneous Symptoms Treated by White Peony

Dizziness, tinnitus, pale complexion, anemia and “weak blood,” and brittle nails are alleviated by this herb.  Headache, vertigo, irritability and bad temper, convulsions and delirium are also helped with Bái Sháo.

Chinese Medicinal Actions of White Peony

Chinese medical terms are different than standard western medical terms.  Bái Sháo “nourishes Blood and preserves Yin.”  It “nourishes the Liver to calm Liver Yang and Liver Wind.”  White Peony “softens the Liver and relieves pain.”  The terms in italics represent words that are distinctive to Chinese Medicine.

Contraindications

White Peony root should not be taken with post partum patients who are still bleeding or who have Blood Stagnation.  Also, patients who have Middle Jiao Yang Vacuity with Cold shouldn’t take it.  Patients who have eczema or rashes that haven’t fully been expressed should not take Bái Sháo.  Patients who are on sedative drugs, anticoagulants, antiplatelets, and antidiabetics should not take white peony.
