JAMA Research Shows that Acupuncture is Effective for Chronic Pain

161939_109142995817040_3670504_nA very large study from JAMA Internal Medicine in 2012 showed that acupuncture is effective in treating back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, chronic headache, and shoulder pain.  This literature review contained  29 randomized clinical control trials and consisted of over 17,000 subjects.

Patients who received acupuncture had less pain, much less than the group who had fake needling or the no treatment group.

The authors concluded:  “Acupuncture is effective for the treatment of chronic pain and is therefore a reasonable referral option. Significant differences between true and sham acupuncture indicate that acupuncture is more than a placebo.”
